High Altitude Inspiration:

Four Days in the Clouds in Grand Lake, Colorado

GL 4

Rise above your normal vantage point. Put your head in the clouds. See what inspiration waits for you when you take the birds-eye view, perched above Grand Lake and nestled in the grandeur of nature and the majestic Rocky Mountains.

Commune with your fellow writers in a rustic, peaceful setting. Clear your mind. See the big picture. Open yourself to inspired creativity and expansion. Take your writing to new heights with us this August in Colorful Colorado.

Nancy Stohlman and Kathy Fish have chosen beautiful Shadowcliff Mountain Lodge in Grand Lake, Colorado for this special summer retreat. Grand Lake is less than 2 hours north of Denver and is in one of the prettiest areas of Colorado, adjacent to Rocky Mountain National Park.

We’ll spend four days and nights with mountain air, lakeside views, skies full of stars and lots of flash fiction. We’ll generate stories, we’ll sculpt stories, we’ll rest, we’ll share, we’ll conference and we will be inspired together in the beauty of late summer in Colorado, under the August meteor showers. We may even spot some wildlife!

Did you know? Colorado has a unique literary history. Stephen King was inspired by and wrote The Shining in the gorgeous Stanley Hotel, just across Rocky Mountain National Park from Grand Lake (you could visit with a rental car on an afternoon off). The Beat Poets, including Jack Kerouac, Neil Cassidy and Allen Ginsberg, all made Denver their home at one point, and Ginsberg even founded the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University in Boulder (where Nancy got her MFA). Hunter S. Thompson not only lived in Colorado until he died but famously ran for Sheriff of Pitkin County, near Aspen. And let’s not forget the legacy of writers like Louis L’Amour.

Shadowcliff Mountain Lodge is an eco-friendly, non-profit retreat center serving the community for 40 years. From the Shadowcliff website:

“Located in Grand Lake, Colorado, our non-profit lodge and retreat center provides welcoming accommodations where connection to people, place, and contemplation come naturally. We offer a variety of European-style rooms for guests all with stunning lake and/or mountain views. Our distinctly unique feel has been described as reminiscent of summer camp, joyfully warm, and peacefully rustic.”

What to expect

An all-inclusive four-day retreat with two or three group sessions each day (including craft talks, generative writing exercises, workshopping sessions and one-on-one mentoring as well as plenty of inspired individual writing time), three delicious locally-sourced meals per day, sunset group writes and a final evening literary salon in the stunning chapel overlooking the lake.

All activities/classes are optional and participants can create a schedule that is supportive and nurturing to their process while finding just the right amount of motivation, guidance, and camaraderie. There are plenty of spaces around the grounds for solitude, reflection, and writing time. Hike, rest, birdwatch, take photos, take your notebook down to the brook. Breathe the mountain air. Let Nancy and Kathy “inspire your journey” during this special time in the Rocky Mountains.

We’ll be fed by the Compassionate Kitchen, focusing on local and organic when possible: “Blessed to be within 200 miles of many wonderful farms both along the Front Range and on the Western Slope of Colorado, our Compassionate Kitchen is able to source seasonal, local, and organic veggies, meat, fruit, dairy, honey, and staples such as flour, most of the time.”

AND once again we will be holding the Fbomb Flash Fiction Reading series on Tuesday, August 13, (featuring special guest renowned flash fiction writer, Randall Brown) for those who can join us in Denver a day early! (The retreat officially begins Wednesday, Aug 14 and ends Sunday, Aug 18.)

Kathy Fish and Nancy Stohlman have 25 years of combined experience writing, publishing, and teaching flash fiction, and they are bringing their expertise together for this encore event! Flash fiction uses skills that translate to any genre, and this workshop is perfect for writers with all levels of experience with the form.
